Punjab awoke to the sound of crying livestock, and rooftops becoming the only remaining lifeboats, all upon a landscape of silence of drained fields. Villages that had once been filled with laughter, farming, and daily rural life, were waste, turned to water-logged ruins.

For the last 17-18 days, SHSG Charitable Trust has been on the ground providing flood-impacted families, and animals, with the lifeline of relief – ration kits and medicines, to hay and fodder for livestock. That seva has been a small ray of sunshine in a long list of horrific visuals. But to continue this work we need to fuel the tractors, pumps, and vehicles that are clearing mud and draining water from villages, as we distribute relief. The battle is still not over – the need is increasing every day and Punjab needs continued, unyielding efforts. When disaster first hit, there was clarity of purpose: rescue those families who were stranded and provide people with any possible way to survive. Volunteers waded through flooded streets to load boats with essential supplies for families stranded by the flood But recovery doesn’t stop after we deliver ration kits. When the waters started to recede, we began to see the new challenges: mud-filled homes, destroyed fields, and loss of animals that are the bedrock of their livelihoods.

• Animal Feed & Cattle Care – Rural Punjab survives on its cattle: cows & buffalo.Many animals died, and many survived, but were starving. By supplying fodder and silage we at SHSG were able to promote the health of these surviving animals and reduce the chances of newly financially damaging families who had no other source of income.
  
• Diesel Support – Diesel is not just fuel in recovery from a flood, diesel is survival. Tractors use diesel to clear mud, pumps use diesel to drain flood water, trucks use diesel to move the rations we deliver. Without diesel nothing moves. That is why diesel support is a priority for SHSG in recoveries.
  
• Seed Distribution – Recovery begins for farmers with the soil. The flood swept their fields from their lives but provided with seeds and fertilizers, farmers can as they start preparing to plant and harvest soon. As we work on the distribution of seeds, SHSG is providing families with an opportunity to rebuild their livelihoods and regain autonomy.
  
  Family Essentials – In addition to farming essentials, families are provided with immediate humanitarian aid from food to healthy drinking water to medicines, especially for children and vulnerable elders. 

This is not merely a transitional assistance package, it is a starting point in the recovery for families, giving them an opportunity to eventually stand on their own two feet again. 

Loss That Cannot Be Undone – The Human and Economic Toll of Punjab Floods

The fact of the matter is, the damage is done – homes have sunk in flood waters leaving little more than a site of buried dreams, villages are covered in mud, and many families said goodbye to the cows and buffaloes that provided their sustenance. The loss of these families is not only emotional, nor only economic. It is the loss of life as they now know it. Without livestock, they have lost access to milk for their children, they have lost that income from dairy, and they have lost the ability to repay the debt incurred for these animals.

Farmers experienced the ultimate despondency of losing their farmland. Their hard work, decades, washed away in a single flood event. Families that had enough dignity to live, were reduced to scraping together only two meals each day. 

As difficult as it is, this is the truth of the matter: the floods took everything it could take. But this is where the recovery starts, this is where seva should continue. We need diesel to drive tractors and trucks to remove debris, deliver fodder for cattle, and take food and supplies back to villages. We are stuck in this moment with families, there is support in our one form; if we are not providing support then the families are slower in rebuilding as they are stuck in their despair.

The devastation caused by the floods in 2025 has left an enormous path of destruction throughout Firozpur, Punjab. Our survey determined that in 80 villages, there are approximately 80 homes in each village without food or necessities that are causing families to fight bare knuckle for survival. The floodwaters have left homes in a devastating state — walls are cracked, roofs are barely holding up, and every corner is filled with mud. Right now, these houses are not just damaged, they’re unsafe for anyone to live in.

Surveying the Damage – In order to understand the full scope of the impact, our team of volunteers went door-to-door in the villages affected, using boats at times to propel ourselves through flood water (we did hire local paddlers to help us in some places). We conducted extensive surveys to determine housing conditions and immediate needs of families. It was heartbreaking: walls were partially collapsed, homes were unstable, and families were having difficulty in acquiring basic necessities. After visiting the villages, the volunteers gave out important basic food and supplies to persons and families in need. These initial relief supplies provided families a way to survive while we work on longer-term recovery. Each ration and supply of essentials brought a degree of hope to households who had been without basic support for days.

The Urgent Need to Rebuild Homes After Punjab Floods 2025

The 2025 floods in Punjab have not only caused a momentary interruption but have eroded the foundations of people’s lives. While immediate sources of relief such as food, water, and medicines are important, damage to housing means families are either living unsafe and often uninhabitable temporary accommodation. Many homes are damaged with walls that are cracked, roofs that are leaking, and floors that are muddy and debris filled, and leave families not able to return to even a glimmer of normal life.

Rebuilding those (destroyed) homes is not simply the putting of a roof over people’s heads, but also a restoration of safety, dignity, and stability. A safe home means so much more than just a roof and four walls — it’s where children can sleep peacefully, parents can focus on providing for their loved ones, and families can dream about a better tomorrow. Without a safe place to live, families face constant struggles — from health risks and unsafe conditions to the stress of never truly feeling secure.
The level of destruction demands urgency and action. A contingent of the victims and new partners that are joining the effort, will want resources, people, and organization so that houses can be repaired, and perhaps reconstructed, as quickly and as safely as possible. For every home repaired or rebuilt, one more family will have shelter and protection and some opportunity for returning to normal life after devastation and destruction from floods. The recovery of Punjab will require both aid relief and the return of housing stock lost in the storm.

Government support was almost invisible, and those who claimed to stand with the people vanished when it was time for real action. Thousands of families were left alone, with no food, no shelter, and no hope.

Today, in 2025, it feels like history is repeating itself. The floods have returned, and so has the pain. Families affected by the flood in Punjab are once again left to fight for survival. The overflowing rivers of Punjab have taken away cattle, houses, grain, and dreams. This is not just about water entering homes – this is about livelihoods being wiped out overnight. This is about mothers not knowing how to feed their children and farmers watching their animals, their only source of income, die helplessly.

We have been rescuing people stranded in water, providing food to the hungry, and caring for animals who have been left behind. This is where our NGO, the Serve Humanity Serve God Charitable Trust, was involved. During our organized flood relief response, we were able to re-establish contact and reach out to families who had been  isolated and unreachable. With kitchens underwater and farmland flooded, it was impossible to cook. Our teams distributed Dry ration kits, Packaged bottled water because drinking from wells was not safe. For many families, when the rescue boat arrived, it was the first sign of any hope after waiting for days since food and support had been unavailable. With tremendous work from capable volunteer organizations and humanitarian support, the flood disaster management teams we are a part of will continue providing relief to those in need.

Medical Aid & Health Support During Punjab Flood 2025

• Living in homes with flood conditions were unsafe conditions not only for the weather but there was the immediate risk of skin infections, fever, and stomach illnesses. Inaccessible hospitals meant our medical volunteers provided humanitarian assistance as listed: medications for fever, diarrhea, infections, Animals were not neglected as well. Managing a flood disaster also included providing food so the cows and buffalo could live during the disaster. For so many impoverished families, livestock is much more than livestock; they are the only source of income.
  
  Our volunteers made sure that: 
• Most animals stranded received food and water
• Animals confined in barns were rescued from drowning
• We distributed fodder, silage, and water because if we saved a cow or buffalo, we saved a family’s livelihood.

It was a difficult task. Since the majority of Punjab was underneath water, rescue operations for floods were dependent on boats and rafts to transport supplies. Groups of youth, community members, and partners with NGOs expressed their commitment to not leaving any families behind. This sense of community and volunteering in service to others has considerable retention from the flood relief work in Punjab, 2025, and represents an important learning of the role of volunteers to contact the most vulnerable.

Though emergency relief has aided in saving lives, recovery will take time. In the wake of all the flooding, survivors will face:
Land that is covered in layers of sand and mud

Firozpur, Punjab — a land known for its courage — faced a heartbreaking test when the Beas and Sutlej rivers overflowed, turning peaceful villages into islands. Streets became streams, homes went underwater, and families climbed onto rooftops just to survive. In some areas, the water reached 10 feet, in others 6 feet, and in some places around 4 feet. Animals cried from barns, and livelihoods built over years were washed away overnight.

This wasn’t just a flood — it was heartbreak for the entire community. Farmers watched helplessly as their crops disappeared under muddy water. Mothers held their hungry children in their arms, and some families endured the pain of losing loved ones to the rushing floodwaters. Cattle, goats, and buffaloes — their only source of income — drowned, leaving them with nothing to start over.

At Serve Humanity Serve God Charitable Trust, we knew we had to act fast. We quickly set up a base camp and began working closely with Panchayat leaders and youth groups to coordinate rescue efforts. Our volunteers rowed boats through flooded streets, rescued stranded families, and carried food, water, and medicines to places where no vehicle could reach. Together with villagers, we made sure no one was left behind — not even the animals. Diesel was provided for tractors to clear debris, and fodder was given to keep surviving animals alive.

One of the most heartbreaking sights was hearing animals crying out loudly in the flooded barns — tied, helpless, and starving for days. Our volunteers waded through chest-deep water, untied them, and slowly guided them to safety. When food was finally given, the animals ate desperately, as if they had been waiting for this moment for days — you could almost feel their relief. We also saw mothers holding their children, crying out for help the moment they saw us. Elderly people stood outside their broken homes, their faces full of fear and pain, waiting for someone to bring food and water. When our volunteers finally reached them, they broke down — not just from hunger but from the relief that someone had come for them. Every rescue, whether of a person or an animal, reminded us that even in the hardest times, hope is alive — and sometimes, just knowing someone is there can give people the courage to keep going.

Even after the waters began to recede, the struggle continued. Houses are filled with mud, fields are destroyed, and families have no food or income. Children still wake up scared, remembering the nights they spent stranded on rooftops.

When the waters of the Beas and Sutlej rivers poured into Qutabdinwala, a small village in Firozpur, Punjab, life changed in an instant. Homes were submerged, animals swept away, and streets became rivers. Families held each other close, fear in their eyes, not knowing what the next moment would bring. Yet, even in the confusion and fear, there was a quiet spark of hope — hope that someone would come to help them, to guide them through the flood.

At Serve Humanity Serve God Charitable Trust, we knew we had to act fast. We set up a base camp right in Qutabdinwala to reach families who had lost almost everything. Over two weeks, our 15 volunteers walked through mud, rowed boats in strong currents, and carried supplies to homes surrounded by water. Every trip was hard, but every life we reached made it worth it. We rescued villagers trapped in their homes using boats and rafts, bringing them food, clean water, blankets, and solar torches to keep them safe and warm.

The flood affected animals too — cows, goats, and buffaloes that families rely on for their livelihood. Our volunteers made sure they got fodder, silage, and medical care, protecting the families’ support systems. Some moments will never be forgotten: a mother and her little boy were stuck on a roof as floodwaters surrounded them, and the boy was running a high fever. Our volunteers reached them just in time, giving them food, comfort, and a safe ride to dry land. Another family had to leave their pet dog behind when they evacuated. Scared and aggressive, the dog was cared for every day by our team until it could safely return to its family. These stories remind us that every life matters, and even in the toughest times, hope can survive.

Hi, my name is Sher Singh. I want to share my story with you. I come from Hoshiarpur where I grew up in a happy family with two brothers and two sisters. Life was good until 2016 when everything changed. I got hurt badly and my injury caused a lot of pain to me and my family. Despite many treatments, my wound only got worse and it smelled terrible, making me feel very sick.

As time went by, my close friends stopped talking to me, and my neighbours started saying hurtful things. Some even said I must have done something wrong to deserve this. I felt very lonely and sad. The pain in my body was bad but the pain in my heart was even worse. I became angry and argued with my family over small things. I was so unhappy that I thought about ending my life many times and tried to do so three times in three and a half years, but I survived.

My injury was severe, with six big wounds. I spent most of my time in bed or the bathroom. The treatments seemed endless and nothing helped. My family tried to support me, but there was little they could do to ease my suffering. I felt completely lost. Just when I thought all hope was gone, I met Manoj Veer from Una. He and his community told me about the Serve Humanity Serve God Charitable Trust. Despite threats from some people, I held onto the hope Manoj gave me. On February 14, 2020, I decided to go to the trust for treatment.

The trust’s doctors gave me medicines to treat the infection and pain. They also used different therapies to help me heal. The staff was kind and caring which made a big difference. They also taught me how to live healthier. They gave me advice on what to eat and how to manage stress which helped a lot in my recovery. Regular check-ups made sure my wounds were healing properly. The trust’s support made me feel like I was part of a new family.

Miraculously, my wounds started to heal. The bad smell went away and I began to feel better. Over eight months, my health improved a lot. My family, who were so sad before, were now very happy. As my body healed, my mind also got better. I no longer felt like a burden. I stopped being angry and found hope and determination. Today, I am strong and free from my past pain. My journey with Serve Humanity Serve God Charitable Trust gave me a new life.

My journey doesn’t end here. I found a new purpose in life. I learned to make handmade crafts like wall hangings and crochet items through YouTube and with the help of a kind sister at the trust. These new skills brought me joy and a sense of achievement.

I want to help others who are in situations like mine. No one should feel alone in their suffering. I want to spread the message that there is always hope, no matter how bad things seem.

The pandemic has brought immense pain and fear, but there are rays of hope. One such story comes from the SHSG Covid Care Center, where a mother’s journey from despair to recovery touched many hearts.

The mother showed symptoms of Covid-19, which led her to seek help. Her main concerns were fever, cough, and fatigue. Upon arrival, the SHSG team quickly isolated her and conducted a thorough examination. Surprisingly, she reported not feeling very sick, but her fear and anxiety were evident. The team ran several tests, including a Covid-19 test, which confirmed her infection. Blood tests and chest X-rays were also conducted to assess her overall health.

She was prescribed antiviral medications and vitamins to boost her immune system. Oxygen therapy was provided to ensure her breathing remained stable. She was advised to rest, stay hydrated, and maintain a healthy diet. Regular check-ups were scheduled to monitor her progress and provide emotional support.

The mother’s condition improved steadily. The safe and caring environment at SHSG played a crucial role in her recovery. After a few days, she felt much better. Her anxiety lessened as her physical health improved. Eventually, she tested negative for Covid-19 and returned home, healthy and grateful.

This case highlights the importance of a supportive environment in the healing process. The SHSG team’s dedication and compassionate care were pivotal in her recovery. The mother faced immense fear and anxiety, which were as challenging as her physical symptoms. The emotional support from the SHSG team was essential.

One patient shared their experience with a private hospital where exorbitant fees were demanded. They feared they might not survive there. At SHSG, we provide care and hope, ensuring patients feel safe and supported.
